Thought this might be of interest to those of you looking at STBs who the seller is guessing the age or the tattoo cannot be determined but the letter is distinguishable. I've found it useful when looking at STBs in auctions. Age doesn't deter me, but either through ignorance or intentional, I've found many STBs to be well off what people say they are.
Tattoo / Freeze Brand Format
For all horses foaled from 1982 through 2002, the first character in the tattoo or freeze brand is a letter, the second character can be a letter or a number and the last three are numbers. The first character indicates the age of the horse, and all of the foals born in a certain year will have the same letter as the first character, starting with the letter A in 1982, B in 1983, and so forth, with the letters I, O, Q and U having been skipped. For horses foaled in 1981 and before, the fifth character is a letter, and the tattoo has the format of four numbers and the letter, or three numbers followed by two letters. Year First Character 1982 A 1983 B 1984 C 1985 D 1986 E 1987 F 1988 G 1989 H 1990 J 1991 K 1992 L 1993 M 1994 N 1995 P 1996 R 1997 S 1998 T 1999 V 2000 W 2001 X 2002 Z
Year Second Character 2003 A 2004 B 2005 C For horses foaled in 1981 and before, the last (fifth) character indicates the year of foaling: Year Fifth Character 1981 Z 1980 Y 1979 X 1978 W 1977 V 1976 T 1975 S 1974 R 1973 P

This info can also be found at STB Canada - We identified a mare we had no clue who she was as her tatoo was not clear - we even DNA and Blood typed her and no hits util one day we took dry pics of her tatoo and the sun was just perfect and we managed along with Robyn MCClure of STB Canada to get a perfect match - Papers signed over by previous owner too - So now if we decide to breed her to straight STB we have her DNA and blood type on file...

I know of a horse with the lip tattoo M6652 and the freeze brand 5A (or could be 6A)
Does this mean she is 15?

Thanks MSA! I'm assuming you got that from the TrackIt program? I use to have the trial for that...but lost my account info Unless you have the pathway program... If you or someone else who has an account on there could get me Falcon Rich's pedigree for me as well as see if Miss Lead ever had any foals and some other bits of info as well if you don't mind...

Thius is from United States Trotting Association. No need for a membership - It is just a tracking tool free to help identify STBS.If you are unable to clearly identify a horse and only have partial info you can use wildcards ** ? to help identify.

Thanks MSA!
Does anyone know of somewhere you can go, free of charge, to see if a standardbred mare has had foals in the past? Also...probably a long shot with this one...but history on past injuries?

past injuries would be via the owner I would assume. STB Canada offers track for a 24 hour trial. We used it to pull all my main mares progeny records and all their race records including her every race. All that info in 24hrs.
With our relocation we are possibly looking at a shared membership for track it in order to better describe and identify most horses.

Yes, I had the trial membership with TrackIt when I owned Ricky (Falcon Rich) and I found out so much info about him. I printed out all the info on him and my friend borrowed it cause she wanted to read all of it and such...and she lost it.
Next year I might buy a membership on there though, I think its worth it.
I'm asking way too many questions here...but what does S&D mean again?

Hmmm...Hi Time Lady never died though...
I'd definetly be interested in doing a partial membership with someone if they do that in 2009.

As I stated Miranda - I was not sure but past researches have brought up deceased horses for me. Maybe Sarah UHSC could help us.
