Hi everyone !
Just found this site through the EMG BB, so cheers to another place to procrastinate
So, I'm a bit of a hybrid - born and raised in a breeding through racing Stbd farm, but started riding hunter/jumper at 8 years old. We have always had 2-4 broodmares foal out each year, and for the past 12 years my dad has trained our babies himself. I couldn't think of a better place to grow up, and still try to get home to help in the barn when I can. I'm now at U of G finishing a MSc in Equine Theriogenology (ie. reproduction) and have applied to vet school (fingers crossed!!).
My riding experience with Stbd's is still pretty limited, but something I'd like to change when circumstances allow. I leadlined on one of our broodies as a kid. We retired a 16 yo broodie who still thought she was 5 yo, upon which I saddled her to see what she'd do. After 8 years off the track, she just looked at me like "what ARE you doing up there??", and then walk-trotted with me a few times quite happily. She was sold to a lady who ended up breeding her to warmbloods (Popeye K and Tricolore), resulting in some awesome Stbd sport type horses.
I still wonder if I can get one of our past geldings back (out of same broodie above:) as a jumper. He's the biggest cuddly, want-to-please-you sucky type, and definately built to jump. I tracked him on USTrotting and he turned up in Pompano Park in December, still grinding it out in the aged claimers. I'm tempted to contact the new owners and ask if they'd consider letting me have him when he retires.
I also want to train our stud to trail ride, since you can tell he desperately misses training. The few times dad's had time to Sunday drive him, he's practically wiggled his way around the track the whole time We also have 3 yo coming off a sesamoid injury that's healing miraculously well. If she's not going to be fit to train again, she'd be another one I'd like to "convert" to hacking.
Anyways, I'm babbling Hope to get to know some of you at some point, and will try to attend the summer show being held in Milton. Should be fun to see all the stbd's under saddle!
