I fell into STBDs by accident. Two or three years ago I decided I was ready to get a horse after being out of the horse world since teen days. Of course, my first was far too much horse for me (not a STBD) -- I overestimated (or over-remembered) my abilities. I found him a better home (I hope) and then watched and waited for someone else. I met Wonder who had been retired from track for a couple of years already and adopted him. He was truly wonderful. So, then he needed a buddy of course. Along came Lisa -- bowed tendons, skinny as a rake and my vet said put her down now instead of 6 months from now after you've spent all that time and money... I wasn't expecting much from Lisa so I gave her a chance and now, 16 months later, she is a blast! Unfortunately, in the interim, Wonder passed away from a terrible accident.. so, then the tables were turned and Lisa needed a buddy. How funny is that -- a companion horse for my companion horse! So, I met Shade and as soon as I saw him, I knew he would fit in, especially for my husband who had grown so attached to Wonder, but not Lisa.
All three came from the track and all three were adoptions and we love(d) all ! I wish I had room and time for more. My horsey friends tell me my horses are beautiful (STBD -- wow!) and Lisa who looked more like an overgrown, skinny donkey, long ears and all, now gets the most compliments!

You're wonderful (as are all the people on the board!) to give the "uselss" horses a chance! You say you're near Sudbury Downs, do you get there often? Are you in touch with people at that track much? The reason I ask is because there's an older (8 or so) stallion racing there right now that my friend groomed and, broke the golden rule of grooming, fell in love with. His name is Barren Hall (not 100% sure on the spelling) and he's a crusty old man but she would love to give him a home when he's retired. She's trying to keep tabs on him as well but it doesn't hurt to have a couple pairs of eyes watching out for him.

I don't go to the Downs at all really. But your friend can keep track of Barren Hall on the OSA website if she's a member, or knows a member. Fees are only I think $100 for a year. Just watch the race results and the tale will be told right there. I could ask someone I know, but since they have some horses of their own they'd like to place, I'd rather not.
As for photos of my two, well, my camera is pretty lousy lately. I'll give it another whirl, but the other thing is -- have you ever tried to photograph a *black* horse!?! It's just about impossible unless you have good equipment and/or know something about photography -- neither of which are in my world!
