Well, to start off, my name is Miranda. (16 years old)
I first discovered and fell in love with this breed about a year ago now. It was when I had finally owned my first horse, who ended up being an ex-sulky racer Standardbred.
His racing name was Falcon Rich, 19 years old, 16.2hh.
He ended up wininng Mr.Vancouver near the end of his career.
He was an awesome horse, but sadly, wasn't a good choice for my first horse.
I had many incidents with him and eventually totally lost my confidence around horses with him.
As much as I had become scared of him, I still really cared about him and didn't want to give up...I looked into all sorts of trainers to help me out but realized a part time job at McDonalds (with a low wage) wasn't going to give me the money I needed for that.
I eventually had to make the hardest decision ever...
His old owner agreed to take him back...but the thought of that was really hard for me... it took me quite some time, but I finally realized it'd be best for the both of us, because since I became so nervous around him, I couldn't give him the extra care he deserved.
Ricky is now happily living back at his old home and I have now recovered from the loss...
Although I will never FULLY recover, as he will always be in my heart...and I will always have that "what-if" in my mind...
But I hope to find him again in the future and become his retirement home because that is the one thing I promised him- I'd find him again.
My confidence is now fully back, and I have now found an opportunity with another ex-sulky racer Standardbred.
It is actually quite ironic since her owner is very nervous around her (basically why she wants me to work with her).
This mare is still working on the very basics of everything under saddle;
transitioning into a walk, turning right (shes very used to only turning left), halting and backing up.
Once she is fine with all of that, then I will begin to train her for trotting...
She's an amazing horse and I can't wait for the future!
