Hi everyone, it's such a great thing to have a forum for standardbred owners. I am glad to be able to share my love of the breed with others who feel the same.
I own one Standardbred, a 9 year old named Seth (racing name was Town Terror) and he is the first horse I have ever owned. When I first got into looking for a horse and was going out to see Seth, I had a couple of friends comment that a standardbred, especially a retired pacer was a useless horse to get, since I want to get into showing. I went out and looked at him anyways and fell in love. He has a fantastic personality, is great with my 20 month old niece and my 14 year old brother and is fantastic for riding, but isn't such a big fan of other horses. He is super smart and picks up on things quickly. I was suprised how quickly he settled into his new home at our farm when we got him April '07 and he even gets along well with the cattle . He was retired from racing due to a ligament injury and then went on to be a lesson horse for a few years before coming to us. I love how he seems to sense if the rider on his back is a beginner, in which case he is super sweet and careful, or an experienced person, in which case he likes to sometimes try his luck and see what he can get away with, lol, but nothing too bratty. He has been the perfect first horse because he is super calm, as I find are most standardbreds and takes things in stride. I have defiently decided that in the future any horse I get will be a standardbred because they are just so smart and have amazing personalities.
